What is a French Press?

The French press, (technically Italian) is one of the quintessential methods of brewing coffee. It's simple in design and has remained infallible despite being nearly 100 years old. It is a cylindrical container with a mesh plunger that, once the coffee is brewed, is pushed down from the top to filter coffee out of the water (coffee). Once the coffee grounds are at the bottom, the liquid to be poured grind free.

The Process

  1. Boil 2x water needed for french press (if you have a 8 oz french press, boil 16 oz of water)
  2. Pour water into french press to preheat the container
  3. Coarsely grind about 2 grams (1/3 tablespoons) per 1 oz of the french press (so for a 12 oz french press, grind 24 grams of coffee, or approximately 4 tablespoons)
  1. Empty preheated water out of the french press
  2. Pour grounds into container
  3. Reboil water, wait 30 seconds to a minute (or use a thermometer to ensure water temperature is approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit)
  4. Fill up the french press with water (for a 12 oz french press, about 10 oz of water)
  5. Stir the mixture for a few seconds
  6. Wait 3-4 minutes
  7. Plunge the coffee grinds to the bottom
  8. Pour into your favor mug, and enjoy
***Important note, this is a baseline guide, riff off and play with the ratios to make it just right***
